Yellow River floods

Major floods of the Yellow River in northern China, caused by its shifting course and heavy sediment load. They repeatedly inundated settlements, displaced communities, and disrupted livelihoods.

Loess Plateau: A highland region of north-central China covered by deep deposits of windblown silt. Eroded loess supplies much of the sediment that raises the riverbed downstream.
1887 Yellow River flood: A catastrophic 1887 flood that breached Yellow River embankments and inundated parts of Henan and neighboring provinces. It exemplifies the deadly consequences of a major breach in a densely populated region.
