George Monck

George Monck (1608–1670) was an English army officer and statesman whose 1660 march from Scotland helped end military rule and restore Charles II.

English Civil War: A series of armed conflicts in England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1642 to 1651 over monarchy, Parliament, and religion. Monck built his military career amid these wars and served Parliament before backing the Restoration.
Scottish occupation by Cromwell: The English Commonwealth’s military government of Scotland after its conquest in the 1650s. Monck commanded Commonwealth forces there, giving him an army outside London’s shifting governments.
Charles II of England: King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1660 until his death in 1685. Monck’s support helped make Charles’s return from exile politically and militarily viable.

Battle of Naseby: A decisive 1645 battle in which Parliament’s New Model Army defeated the main Royalist field army. Monck served in the Parliamentarian army during the campaigns that culminated in this victory.
Rump Parliament: The remnant of the Long Parliament that governed England after Pride’s Purge in 1648. Monck helped restore this Parliament in 1660, then pressed it to dissolve and call elections.
